Initial Assessment and Recovery Position

When Alone or with Someone

Before proceeding, ensure the scene is safe. If alone, follow these steps:

  • Call for Help: If possible, send someone nearby to call emergency services.
  • Introduce Yourself: Approach the patient, tap their collarbone for a response, and ask permission to help.
  • Assess Consciousness: If conscious, gather information about the situation without allowing movement.
  • Check Breathing: If unconscious, ensure they are breathing. Open the airway by tilting the head back.
  • Perform CPR if Necessary: Call emergency services before starting if not breathing.

Opening the Airway

To check breathing:

  • Place one hand on the forehead and the other on the chin to tilt the head back gently.
  • Look, listen, and feel for breathing for up to 10 seconds.
  • Ensure the chest rises and falls.

Placing in the Recovery Position

Ensure safety and comfort:

  • Assess for Injuries: Perform a head-to-toe check for injuries, using gloves if available.
  • Positioning: With the patient on their back:
    • Bring the nearest arm to a right angle to the head.
    • Hold the other hand against their face.
    • Lift the far leg, keeping the airway supported.
    • Turn them onto their side facing you.
  • Monitoring: Ensure the airway remains open and monitor breathing.
  • Seeking Help: If alone, go for help and return to monitor the patient regularly.

Remember to keep the patient comfortable and speak to them throughout to monitor their condition.

If completely alone without a phone, leave briefly to call emergency services and return immediately.
